Principals Report

As mentioned last week, Mr Ryan Kinder has been appointed Principal of Bothwell District High School commencing Monday 25 July. Mr Kinder is aiming to visit the school before the end of the term and I will bring him to meet all the classes.
This week all students from Kinder to Year 10 have participated in First Aid training. It has been funny to see at the conclusion of every lesson students leaving with slings and bandages on different parts of their bodies. On Monday virtually every child in the primary school went home with a different body part bandaged with the intent of ‘pranking’ their parents. We hope you weren’t too alarmed when your child arrived home. Hopefully they used their new found skills to continue practising on other members of the household. On Tuesday and Wednesday all students in 9/10 and Mr O’Toole participated in a two day workshop completing their First Aid qualification. Thank you to the Bothwell DHS School Association for making this program accessible to our students. Having current first aid knowledge and skills is such a valuable skill to have and we hope that this qualification will assist students if an emergency situation presented and support them when seeking employment opportunities.
As you would have heard from the media, Public Health from Saturday 25 June have changed the rules regarding mask wearing at schools. From Monday 27 June, students, staff and visitors to the school will no longer be required to wear a face mask at school. If students, staff and visitors still wish to wear a face mask, they will be supported in doing this and the school has sufficient supplies to support this. A reminder, however, that it is still mandatory for Close Contacts to test negative on a RAT or PCR test in order to leave home for 7 days and Close Contacts are required to wear a facemask when indoors . Also if you are experiencing cold and flu symptoms, please stay home, get tested and wear a face mask to protect others. If you require RAT tests for home, please contact the school office and we will provide you with a supply of RAT tests.
Thank you to Miss Griggs for her organisation of the Do it for Dolly Day, Tuesday 14th June, 2022. $725.00 was raised for the Dolly's Dream foundation. As a school we will continue educating and equipping students with the skills to stay safe in online situations. In this endeavour we request the support from parents/carers to regularly monitor your child’s online interactions and don’t forget that the eSafety Commissioner website has lots of information and factsheets for the different social media platforms, including how to set up your privacy settings and details of how to interact responsibly in an online space.
A reminder that from Monday 27 to Wednesday 30 June, teachers will be conducting Student / Parent / Teacher interviews. Copies of student reports can be collected from the Office prior to the discussion. If you haven’t booked your appointment see below for details or contact the school office for assistance.
School Photos are scheduled for Monday 4 July, please return your order form so you don't miss out.
Kind regards,
Louise Anders
Acting Principal

Face Mask Removal
Public Health has advised that from Monday 27 June 2022, face masks are no longer mandatory in schools and Child and Family Learning Centres. This is because of reduced COVID-19 cases in our community.
It’s important to continue to:
- stay at home if unwell, and get tested
- practise COVID-safe behaviours such as frequent handwashing and sanitising
- be up to date with your COVID-19 vaccinations.
Students, staff and visitors are supported to continue to wear face masks if they choose to. Face masks are still available at our School Office if you need them.
When face masks are required
If you’re a close contact, you are still required to wear a face mask indoors as per current Public Health advice.
From time-to-time our school might identify activities or situations where masks are required to be worn. We ask for your support when this happens and know that it is in the best interests of our students, staff and our school.
Our staff will continue to wear masks when working closely with students who are vulnerable to COVID-19.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us directly to discuss.
For more information about COVID-19, please visit the Tasmanian Government Coronavirus website or contact the Tasmanian Public Health Hotline on 1800 671 738, or Department of Education COVID-19 Support Hotline at COVID19support@education.tas.gov.au or on 1800 816 057.

Cooking with Brigette
In cooking our students made Chow Mein. They really enjoyed eating this dish.

Class 2 Making Birds Nests
Working in small groups Class 2 were challenged with a STEM activity to design and create a bird’s nest.
Using only craft sticks, cotton wool and glue students had to ensure the nest was big enough to fit one egg inside and keep a bird’s egg safe and warm.

Class 1 Library Visit
Class 1 visited the library to read the story Echidna Jim went for a Swim, written by Phil Cummings. After listening to the story they decorated echidna's.

K - 8 First Aid Training
On Monday 20th June, Damian from St Johns Ambulance worked with students from Kindergarten to Year 8 teaching first aid skills. They learnt basic first aid skills including DRSABCD, safely placing someone into the recovery position, treating burns and applying bandages to affected areas. The K-5s had fun wrapping up arms, legs and heads of their pretend injuries.
The attached photos show our Grades 5 and 6 students practsing thier CPR skills.

Farm and Ag Report
Here we are ending term 2, 2022 and saying goodbye to the shorter days. Some of the highlights include the digging of our lilium bulbs which is still happening, and sales from these bulbs will cover the cost of the initial outlay and allow us to purchase new stock for the 2023 growing season. All family and friends of BDHS are welcomed to order bulbs through the school office at $2.50 each of 5 for $10.
Our Grade 9/10 students were given the opportunity to be involved in wool handling training, and compete at the Campbell Town Show. Unfortunately, I came down with the dreaded Covid on show day and missed seeing our students compete. Congratulations to Mikel and James and I really wish I had been there to see the sheep jump into Renee’s lap, dragging the fleece with it. A big thank you to Mathew Haney for coaching our students and to Dennistoun Farm and Spring Hill Farm for allowing us the time to work in their sheds.
On the 31st May our students played football against Oatlands at Campania and won with a healthy margin. I am always impressed by how well our students represent the school and their high level of good sportsmanship.
More recently we enjoyed an excursion to Waddamana Power Station Heritage Site with the focus on horticulture. Our students experienced firsthand budding propagation and practiced this technique. They were also taken about the site and shown the diverse range of introduced plants that have an extensive history and connection to Waddamana.
In week 7 of Term 2, Anthony McConnon from Southcentral Workforce Network, along with three of his colleagues talked with our Grade 8-10 students about the expectations and processes when planning a career. Our students were extremely well engaged, and many helpful ideas were shared with links to resources to help our students’ growth and planning for their future. Thank you to Anthony, Mel, Maddie and Amy.
With that behind us we are planning Term 3. This should include AGFEST, Keys2Drive and PlatesPlus learner driving, White Card, AgCard and The Wool Harvesting Certificate.
We are also searching for employers who might like to offer one of our Grade 9 or 10 students the opportunity for work experience. This would involve supporting a student one day per week for a few weeks or for many weeks, and from any industry. Our students’ interests include hospitality, health care, agriculture, construction, emergency services, and more. Students are covered under the Department of Education’s policies whilst engaging in approved work experience. Please contact the school so we can discuss potential work experience opportunities for our students.
Finally, good luck to our Principal Ms Anders and thank you for your support with our Agriculture Studies and future build.

Kinder Prep Participating in First Aid
On Monday, Kinder/Prep participated in the First Aid program. We learnt about who can help us when we're hurt, what number we can call if we need help and got to use, and take home, some bandages.

Cooking with Brigette
In cooking the students tried their hand at making Monte Carlo biscuits. From the looks of the photos they have done a fantastic Job. Their recipe folder should be growing with lot of great recipes to use in the future.

Fairy Gardens with Mr Vreman
Our younger students have been making Fairy Gardens with Mr Vreman and Kimmi.
